Exploring the view

We’re all drawn to certain places. If you had the power to get somewhere — anywhere — where would you go right now? For your twist, focus on building a setting description.

Admittedly when reading the task for today’s challenge I thought it would be quite easy, considering the vast amount of places I would love to visit. But the difficulty is narrowing that down to one place. So I chose outside.

Now I know you’re thinking, what a cop out! If I had the power, (and money) to go anywhere I would choose to be outside everyday, a new landscape each day.

Living in the UK I’d say there’s a certain call to be close to the coast. The salty scent in the wind, the mocking sound of sea gulls preying on your food, the ever wanting urge to buy a 99 flake or abandon your coppers in the arcade. Waves crashing on the beach is music to the ears, the movement very soothing backwash – breathe in, swash – breathe out. The feel of the sand between your feet, the small grains gently rubbing over your skin. Or the sharp feeling of angular shingles, both extremely tiring to walk along.

There’s the woodlands, feeling small surrounded by the tall trunks of trees, bare until their canopy, a blanket of needles on the ground in the pine plantations. Or the mighty oak present in ancient woodlands. The chorus of birds as you walk beneath them. Not to mention the rainfall of colour in the autumn, the rustling of the leaves as you kick them aside.

Visit different villages and towns, and see their history and culture rise from the ground brick by brick, brought alive by the locals. The beautiful cottages lining the roads, or green spaces vital to contrast the man made structures.

Or a dream for me, to visit natural hazards, to see lava flow along the landscape especially the smooth surface of pahoehoe lava, or the feel the shudder of an earthquake, nothing disastrous of course.

Sitting in front of a computer at work tomorrow is going to feel very dull in comparison to the picture in my head.
